How to animate a cat run cycle step by pace

A cat run wheel is dissimilar than a cat walk wheel in a lot of ways.

Plain a run is much faster. But in quadrupeds this also means a completely different pattern of movement for the legs. Plus there'south hang time for when all the feet are in the air with some squash and stretch in the body.

All of this movement varies a fleck depending on the kind of true cat your animating. Lions are heavier than cheetahs. So cheetahs are more than flexible, faster, and able to hit more extreme poses.

But generally cat runs are very like.

And at the finish of the twenty-four hours having both a cat walk cycle and a cat run cycle with solid weight and power on your demo reel can be quite impressive. And then definitely take your time in the tutorial to make the best run cycle you tin.

Below is an overview of major steps the tutorial will walk you through from blocking to polish.

*Similar the cat walk cycle we'll be using the  Lion Rig by Truong again

Cat Run Cycle - Torso Blocking

Every bit a walk is and so different than a run I'll utilise a different workflow in this tutorial. More of a layering / straight ahead approach than pose to pose.

So we'll start with the body first and ignore the legs. And we'll employ automobile tangent right of the bat to become a strong sense of weight in the torso.

Cat-Run-Cycle-Animation-Tutorial-Step1

Interruption the torso upward and tackle one part at a time starting with the Breast.

So block out the pelvis - all the translates and rotates.

To wrap upwards the torso blocking - rough out the caput and belly motion.

Pace two: Cat Run Bike - Legs Blocking

Cat-Run-Cycle-Animation-Tutorial-Step2

Rough out the forepart leg primal poses on frame ane, 3, six, 9, and 13

Crude out the dorsum leg key poses on frame ane, three, 6, 9, and 13

Adjust all the legs from the front view too.

Pace 3: Cat Run Cycle - Legs Blocking Plus

Cat-Run-Cycle-Animation-Tutorial-Step3

Add together remaining front leg central poses for the last points of contact and elevator off

Add remaining back leg central poses for the concluding points of contact and elevator off

Adjust the chest/pelvis as needed to get the proper straights/bends in legs and to make sure the torso has plenty weight.

Pace 4: Cat Run Cycle - Body Refining

Cycle all the animation for offsetting overlap

Overlap the caput and refine the side to side of the pelvis/breast.

Refine the abdomen'southward translates and rotates for stronger shapes / drag

Step 5: True cat Run Cycle - Polish

Add Tail and Ear Overlap that doesn't overpower the residual of the animation

Polish Pes Arcs and Shoulders

Smooth up Knees/Elbows / Ankles to make certain theres no pops.

Struggling to larn the basics?

Has educational activity yourself animation been frustrating? Has overlap, smooth move, and weight been hard to become right? Or mayhap you're not sure where to even begin... Get-go hither and overcome it all.
